Volunteering

There are many ways that you can volunteer to help our local affiliate of Habitat for Humanity here in Jackson County.

Building

The homes are mostly built with volunteer labor.  We bring in professional trades people only when necessary.  We are generally building a home from early spring until it is finished in the late fall.  Work times are primarily Wednesday and Saturday mornings.  Each week email is sent out to our pool of building volunteers describing what will done the following week.  If a volunteer feels that he or she can help in those areas they can show up whenever they are able; no reservations required..  Skills from carrying supplies and cleaning up, to hammering, wiring, cabinetry etc. are required.  If you would like to be added to the building volunteer list please contact Jim Olyniec  at 256-259-0173 or email habitatjc@gmail.com.
 

Board and Committees

If you are interesting in helping in some other way there are lots of non-building jobs to be done too.  We have no paid staff, so everything needed to run the organization is done by volunteers.  One can serve on a committee to select a partner family, or the committee that keeps up with our homeowner families to make sure that they are adjusting to homeownership well, or the committee that educates homeowners, when necessary, in basic homeownership and finance skills.   A person to handle publicity is needed.  Board members, that oversee the entire functioning of the affiliate are also volunteers.  If you are interested in volunteering for any of these positions, please call 256-574-4138 or email us at habitatjc@gmail.com.

Chili Challenge

Our major fund raiser is the Chili Challenge and Silent Auction which is held on the last Saturday of February each year.  Without this event we could not afford to build a new home each year.  Lots of volunteers are needed for this event.  At the event, we need chili challengers, people to staff the silent auction tables, ticket sellers, and lunch preparation and serving.

Prior to the event we need people to solicit local businesses for donations for the silent auction or to round up friends to donate auction items such as a luncheon, boat trip or beach house stay.  We need people to work on the preparation of the bidding sheets, and marking the items for auction.

There is lot a to do and we can use you in many ways if you are willing to help in this major fundraiser which is a well established family friendly event.
